Perplexity Brand Tracking: See Where Perplexity Mentions and Cites You
Perplexity retrieves the live web on almost every answer and shows numbered, clickable citations, so being cited is a fact you can check, not a guess. GetIntel reads Perplexity from the real product UI every day on your real buyer questions, and shows exactly which citations you’re winning, and which you’re not.

What Perplexity brand tracking is
Perplexity brand tracking is checking, on a schedule, whether Perplexity names your brand when a buyer asks it a question in your category, and whether it links your site among the numbered sources under the answer. The first is a mention and the second is a citation, and they come apart: your page can be cited in an answer that recommends a competitor, and Perplexity can name you while citing only other sites. The difference between mentioned and cited is why a tracker has to record both.
Perplexity makes the citation half easier to check than any other engine, because it shows its sources on almost every answer: 85.9% of its runs in our daily tracking from 10 July to 10 August 2026 carried citations, the highest of the four daily engines. The mention half is harder for a different reason. Perplexity is the engine most willing to recommend nobody at all.
How Perplexity picks its sources
Perplexity searches the live web on nearly every question, reads the results, and writes an answer with numbered citations. It runs its own crawler, PerplexityBot, alongside the other web sources it pulls from at query time. Perplexity has not published how it ranks candidates, so the figures below are what its answers returned in our own measurement.
About nine sources, or none
In our 2 August 2026 run of 100 buyer questions across 10 software categories, Perplexity cited a median of 9 different domains per answer and a mean of 7.61. The distribution is split: 84 of 100 answers cited six or more sources, 16 cited none, and not one cited between one and five. That split is why vendors publish such different averages, which we unpick in how many sources Perplexity cites.
No site owns the answer
Perplexity’s 840 citations across those 100 answers went to 453 different domains. The most-cited was zapier.com with 3.3% of them, then reddit.com at 2.1%, g2.com at 1.8% and techradar.com at 1.5%. Its top three domains took 7.3% of its citations, against 19.6% for Google AI Overviews. Roundups, review sites and forums lead, but no single site holds a category, so the page that answers the specific question is what gets cited. The audit method is in Perplexity citation sources data, and what earns a place among those sources is in how to rank in Perplexity.
It often recommends nobody
Perplexity named no vendor at all on 19 of 100 commercial questions on 2 August 2026, the most of the five engines. On our own tracked question set on 17 September 2026, it named no product on 71.7% of 120 observations. On those questions it explains the category and links sources without picking anyone, so a missing mention is often a category nobody has won yet rather than one you lost.
The steadiest engine, and its own sources
Perplexity changes its mind less than any other engine. Its cited source set changed on 76.4% of consecutive daily runs from 10 July to 10 August 2026, against 99.7% for ChatGPT, and consecutive runs shared 51.4% of their sources. Its sources are still its own: they overlapped Gemini’s by 11.2%, Google AI Overviews’ by 10.3% and ChatGPT’s by 4.8% on the same questions.
Perplexity names no product at all on 71.7% of buyer questions.
How often an engine declines to name anything decides what a gap costs you. We read our own tracked buyer-question set on 2026-09-17 and scored each engine’s dominant state over a trailing 7-day window.
| Engine | Names no product at all | What that means for you |
|---|---|---|
| Perplexity | 71.7% | Mostly leaves the category open |
| ChatGPT | 28.3% | Often answers without naming a tool |
| Google AI Overviews | 15.0% | Usually picks, and cites its sources inline |
| Gemini | 5.0% | Almost always picks a winner |
60 tracked buyer questions, read 2026-09-17, dominant state over a trailing 7-day window. Rows and method are in the published dataset. One category and one brand’s prompt set, not a general claim about any engine. Perplexity is sampled at roughly 2 runs per question against 6 to 7 for the others, so its aggregate is the defensible figure and no per-question Perplexity rate is reported.
Perplexity is the most open engine of the four by a wide margin. On 43 of 60 tracked questions it named no product at all, against 3 of 60 for Gemini. An open question is not a loss, it is a category nobody has won yet, and it is the cheapest kind of gap to close. The risk is the opposite one: a dashboard that blends engines into a single score will read Perplexity’s openness as weakness and hide where the real contest is.
How to check your brand in Perplexity by hand
Perplexity is the easiest engine to audit yourself, because the sources are on the page. A careful first pass takes about an hour:
- Write 10 to 15 questions in your buyers’ words. “Best tool for X for a small team”, “alternatives to [competitor]”, “X vs Y”. Do not type your own brand name: that tells you Perplexity knows you, not whether it recommends you. Seeing the answer a Perplexity buyer gets covers the wording.
- Ask in a logged-out or private window, in the default search mode. A signed-in account can carry your own history, and the deeper research modes read and cite more sources than a quick question does.
- Record the mention: were you named, and in what position among the names?
- Record the citations: copy every numbered source URL and tag it as yours, a competitor’s, or a third party’s.
- Repeat on the same questions a week later and compare. URLs that recur across weeks are the pages worth getting onto.
Be honest about what this is: a snapshot of one engine, good for 10 to 15 questions before it turns into a standing weekly afternoon.

Why manual checking breaks
- Answers vary between reruns. Perplexity is the steadiest engine and still returned a different set of sources on 26.7% of reruns taken about 20 minutes apart on 12 August 2026. Of 520 question-and-engine series we tracked from 10 July to 10 August 2026, 65 changed state, and on those a single check landed on the minority answer 23.2% of the time.
- Some answers cite nothing. 16 of 100 Perplexity answers on 2 August 2026 carried no sources at all. One check can land on one of those and tell you nothing about citations.
- There is no history. A spreadsheet does not remember which rival held each question last month, which is the comparison that shows whether anything you shipped worked.
- The long tail hides patterns. With 453 domains behind 100 answers, a source has to recur across many runs before it is clearly worth pursuing, and tagging that many URLs by hand does not last.
- It is one engine. Perplexity shares under 12% of its sources with any other engine, so a clean Perplexity spreadsheet says nothing about ChatGPT, Gemini or Google AI Overviews.

How GetIntel tracks your brand in Perplexity
The real Perplexity UI, the same questions, every day.
GetIntel reads Perplexity from the real product UI, not an API, on the same set of buyer questions every day, so the trend you see is real movement, not a one-time snapshot. Buyer questions are grouped into topics, and each topic is scored on its own with a trend, so you see which subject is weak instead of one blended number.
- Checked daily on every plan: Monitor, Pro, and Growth
- Buyer questions grouped into topics, each scored with its own trend
- Every answer state (Recommended, Mentioned, Absent, Open, No answer) logged per question
Every source Perplexity cites, sorted yours or someone else's.
For every buyer question in your category, GetIntel logs every URL Perplexity cites in its answer, classified as yours, a named competitor’s, or a third party’s (a review site, a comparison blog, a forum thread). You can read the full answer text, not just a score, and see exactly who won the citation when you didn’t.
- Every cited source, classified yours / competitor / third-party
- Full answer text viewable per question, not just a score
- Your Perplexity result side by side with ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Overviews, and Claude (Growth, weekly)
Who gets cited instead.
When Perplexity skips your domain, it’s citing someone. GetIntel ranks every brand named in your category, tracks your position and share of voice among them, and on Pro and Growth shows your head-to-head win rate against each named rival, so you know exactly who you’re losing citations to.
See how measurement worksA ranked task list, not just a report.
Monitor is monitoring only. On Pro and Growth, every gap becomes a ranked task across four layers: on-page (pages to refresh or write), off-page (lists and articles AI reads that don’t mention you), UGC (Reddit, YouTube, LinkedIn), and a weekly technical scan for blocked AI crawlers. Each task explains why it matters, gives a checklist, and lists the topics it moves. Where GetIntel can write the work itself, it does: the page copy, the outreach pitch, the Reddit reply; new pages come as a brief. Connect a coding agent over MCP (Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, and others) and it reads your data and does the work in your own codebase. You review what it changes.
