Google AI Overviews Tracker: See When AI Overviews Cite You

Google has no public API for AI Overviews, so GetIntel reads the real, rendered result every day and records whether you're cited, whether an Overview even shows, and exactly who got the citation instead.

One keyword is a spot check, not a trend.

The check above reads one query, once, the same check as our standalone AI Overviews checker. What gets a page cited in an Overview in the first place is covered in how to rank in AI Overviews. Tracking means the same buyer questions run every day, so you can see whether an Overview started citing someone else last Tuesday. Get the full free report: 60 AI checks across 3 engines, about 2 minutes, no signup.

We run 60 AI checks (20 buyer questions × 3 engines) to see if you get named.

What AI Overviews tracking is, and how it differs from rank tracking

AI Overviews tracking is checking, on a schedule, whether Google shows an AI Overview for your buyer queries, whether that Overview names your brand, and whether it cites your page as a source. It sits next to rank tracking but measures a different thing. A rank tracker records where one URL lands for one keyword. An AI Overviews tracker records whether the answer above those results mentions you at all, and who it credits when it does not.

That difference matters because the two come apart. A page can rank first and never be cited in the Overview, and a page outside the top results can be cited because it answers the exact question more cleanly. Position inside an Overview is not a stable number either: across the four engines we track daily, a cited domain kept the same position between consecutive runs only 39.5% of the time between 10 July and 10 August 2026. So the useful record per query is four fields: did an Overview appear, were you named, were you cited, and who was cited instead.

How Google picks AI Overview sources

Google builds each Overview from its own index at query time, so eligibility starts with ordinary search: a page Google does not rank is rarely one it cites. What happens after that is visible only in the output, and on our own measurements it looks like this.

It does not always appear

In our own category, Overviews appeared on 59 of 60 tracked buyer questions over the week to 29 August 2026. Across a broader run of 100 buyer questions in 10 software categories on 5 August 2026, Google rendered no Overview for 25 of them. Whether an Overview shows is a result in its own right, and a tracker that scores a missing Overview as “not visible” is reporting something false.

More sources per answer than any other engine, and more concentrated

When it answers, an Overview cites widely: 10.05 different domains per answer in our 2 August 2026 run, and it never answered without citing. Those citations are also the most concentrated of any engine. Its top three domains took 19.6% of its citations and YouTube alone took 11%, against 3.6% for Claude’s top three. That makes targeting the handful of sources an Overview keeps returning to more realistic on Google than anywhere else. The patterns in what gets cited are set out in Google AI Overviews citation patterns.

It names fewer brands than it cites

The same run found Overviews naming 3.59 vendors per answer, the fewest of the five engines, while citing the most sources. Many of those citations go to pages about the category rather than to the products named. The page-level version of the fix, stating a claim as a short, liftable sentence, is worked through in getting your pricing page cited in AI Overviews, and the wider playbook in how to rank in AI Overviews.

It reads different sources from Google’s other surfaces

Sharing an owner and an index does not mean sharing sources. In our daily tracking to 10 August 2026, Overviews shared 12.7% of their cited domains with Gemini, 10.3% with Perplexity and 4.8% with ChatGPT. On 5 August 2026 they shared 21.8% with Google AI Mode, which the AI Mode vs AI Overviews vs Gemini comparison covers in full.

How to check AI Overviews by hand, and why it breaks

A weekly manual log is a fair way to start. Pick a fixed set of queries, search them logged out or in a private window from the country your buyers are in, and record four fields per query each week:

  1. Whether the Overview appeared at all. An empty result and an Overview that did not cite you are different events. Collapsing them corrupts the trend.
  2. Whether you were named. The yes or no, not a position, since position does not persist.
  3. Which domains it cited. This is where the actionable information is, because these sources differ so much from every other engine’s that you cannot infer them from what you know.
  4. Which queries only this surface covers. Those are the argument for tracking it on its own line rather than inside a blended AI score.

A month of that log for one query looks like this:

WeekOverview appearedYou were namedDomains cited
1YesNo6
2Non/a0
3YesNo8
4YesYes5

Week 2 is the row people get wrong. No Overview appeared, so it is not a week you were absent from the answer; there was no answer. Scoring it as a zero drags a four-week average down by a quarter for a reason that has nothing to do with you. Week 4 is the one worth acting on, and only because weeks 1 and 3 exist to compare it against. A single check that landed on week 4 would have said you are visible in AI Overviews, which would be wrong three weeks in four.

It breaks in four places:

  • Empty weeks are common. Across 1,280 runs between 10 July and 10 August 2026, AI Overviews returned no citations on 21.6% of them, the most of the four daily engines. One empty check is close to uninformative.
  • The sources move. The set of cited sources changed on 95.0% of consecutive daily runs in the same window, so a list read once is out of date by the next day.
  • Your location and device change the result. Overviews roll out unevenly, and a check from your own city is not your buyer’s.
  • It takes an hour you stop spending. Twenty queries read properly, sources and all, is an afternoon a week, and most manual logs stop by week three.

For one query right now, the AI Overviews checker runs the live result with no signup. To compare tools that run it continuously, see our ranking of the best AI Overviews trackers, with every price dated, or the best AI visibility tools across every engine.

How it works

See your AI Overview visibility in minutes.

No tag, no SDK. Paste a domain and the daily AI Overview checks start.

01

Connect your domain

GetIntel maps your category and the buyer-intent queries most likely to trigger a Google AI Overview.

02

Daily AI Overview checks

GetIntel reads the real, rendered SERP every day (there’s no API to lean on) and records whether an Overview triggers, whether you’re cited, and who’s cited instead.

03

Scored topics, ranked tasks

Results roll up into a score for each topic, tracked against competitors. On Pro and Growth, citation gaps turn into a ranked task list your coding agent can connect to over MCP and work through in your own codebase. Where it can, GetIntel writes the work itself: the page copy, the outreach pitch, the Reddit reply. New pages come as a brief.

How GetIntel tracks it

How GetIntel tracks your brand in AI Overviews

How AI Overviews decide

AI Overviews live inside Google, and can cite anyone.

An AI Overview renders above the blue links, generated fresh from the current search results at query time, not a static rehash of your organic ranking. Some buyer queries get no Overview at all. When one does show, it can name a single company, describe the category with nobody named, or cite a source you don’t control, such as a forum thread or a roundup, instead of a vendor’s own page.

  • Rendered fresh per query, not a copy of your organic rank
  • Some queries get no Overview, some name no single company
  • Citations can point to a third party instead of your homepage

No official API

No API, so GetIntel reads the real overview.

Google has never shipped a public way to ask whether a brand appeared in an AI Overview. Most tools either skip Google's AI layer entirely or scrape the results page and guess, and both break the moment the layout shifts or AIO rolls out unevenly by region. GetIntel runs structured queries through infrastructure built to detect the actual Overview block and read what it cites.

  • Detects whether an Overview triggers at all, not just what it says
  • Reads the live Google result, not an estimate from proxy signals
  • Records the honest result even when no Overview appears

The citation mix

See exactly who gets cited, on every query.

Every source an AI Overview cites gets logged and classified as yours, a competitor’s, or a third party neither of you controls. Open any buyer question and read the full answer text alongside its sources, so you know exactly what got cited instead of guessing from the summary.

What GetIntel tracks

Cited, skipped, or beaten: on every buyer query.

For each buyer-intent query in your category, GetIntel records whether an Overview triggered at all, whether your brand got cited inside it, and exactly which source got the citation instead. Results roll into a topic score you track over time, next to the same query run on ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini daily, and Claude weekly on Growth.

  • Whether an Overview triggers, tracked as its own signal
  • Whether you’re cited, and which source got cited instead
  • Your AIO result next to the other engines, scored the same way

Frequently asked questions

Put a fixed set of real buyer queries to Google on a schedule and record four things for each: whether an AI Overview appeared at all, whether your brand was named, whether your page was cited as a source, and which domains were cited instead. Keep the queries and the location fixed, and read the trend over weeks. GetIntel does this daily on every plan, reading the live Google result, and keeps the history for every query.

Rank organically for the query, get named on the comparison pages and roundups the Overview already cites, and state your answer in one extractable sentence near the top of the page. There is no position to rank for inside an Overview, only named or not named. On our own tracked set, read 29 August 2026, an Overview appeared on 59 of 60 buyer questions and named a specific product on 45, so the slot is usually held by someone.

A tool that checks Google's AI Overviews for your buyer queries on a schedule and records whether an Overview showed, whether you were named or cited, and who was cited instead. It differs from a rank tracker, which records where one URL ranks for one keyword. GetIntel tracks AI Overviews daily alongside ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini, from $29 a month.

It depends on price and on what the tool does with the data. Ten tools track Google AI Overviews, from GetIntel and Otterly.AI at $29 a month to Scrunch AI at $250, with LLMrefs offering a free tier. Check whether AI Overviews is included at the entry price or costs a model slot, and what the tool reports when no Overview renders. Our ranking of the best AI Overviews trackers dates every price.

For one query right now, GetIntel's free AI Overviews checker runs the live Google result and shows whether an Overview appeared and who it cited, with no signup. For a real reading, check the same queries over several weeks: across 1,280 runs between 10 July and 10 August 2026, AI Overviews returned no citations at all on about one run in five, so a single empty check tells you very little.

Usually because a different source answers the query more directly, not because of your organic ranking alone. An Overview is generated from the results at query time and cites the pages it can lift a clean answer from, often comparison posts, roundups, forums or YouTube. In our 2 August 2026 run, YouTube alone took 11% of all AI Overviews citations. GetIntel records, per query, whether no Overview showed or an Overview showed and cited someone else.

No. Google has never shipped a public, official way to programmatically ask whether a given brand appeared in an AI Overview for a given query. Every tool that tracks AI Overviews reads the live results page, and that approach has to cope with layout changes and with Overviews rolling out unevenly by region and device.

AI Overviews appear inside regular Google Search results, above the blue links, and only show for some queries. Gemini is a separate assistant at gemini.google.com and in the Gemini app. They cite different pages: across 129 prompts in our daily tracking to 10 August 2026 they shared 12.7% of their cited domains, so GetIntel tracks them as two engines.
