5 Ways to Improve Your Domain Rating

These tactics have the highest ROI for early-stage SaaS sites.

1

Submit to SaaS directories

Product Hunt, G2, Capterra, AlternativeTo, and SaaSHub all have high DR and provide dofollow links. Each submission can meaningfully move your DR.

2

Guest post on industry blogs

Writing valuable content for relevant blogs in your niche earns contextual backlinks. Even 2-3 quality guest posts per month compounds over time.

3

Get listed in free business directories

Crunchbase, AngelList, LinkedIn Company, and industry-specific directories often have DR 60-90 and take just minutes to set up.

4

Build free tools people link to

Free calculators, templates, and tools attract natural backlinks. A tool that solves a real problem can earn dozens of organic links with zero outreach.

5

Create linkable assets

Original research, data studies, comprehensive guides, and infographics are the content types most likely to earn editorial links from journalists and bloggers.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Domain Rating (DR) is a metric created by Ahrefs that measures the strength of a website's backlink profile on a scale of 0 to 100. A higher DR means more authoritative backlinks pointing to your site. It's one of the best indicators of a site's overall SEO strength and likelihood to rank.

DR 0-20 is typical for brand-new websites (under 1 year old). DR 20-40 is solid for early-stage sites with some link building. DR 40-60 is strong and competitive for most niches. DR 60+ is excellent and usually reserved for established brands and media sites. DR 80+ is elite (think Wikipedia, Forbes, TechCrunch).

Growing DR is a long game. With consistent effort, most new sites can reach DR 20-30 within 12 months. Going from DR 30 to 50 typically takes 1-2 years of active link building. The DR scale is logarithmic, so each additional point gets progressively harder to earn.

DR (Domain Rating) is Ahrefs' metric. DA (Domain Authority) is Moz's equivalent metric. Both measure backlink strength on a 0-100 scale, but they use different algorithms and data sources. Neither is "official": Google uses its own internal PageRank, which is not publicly shared.

To see your real DR, visit Ahrefs' free Website Authority Checker at ahrefs.com/website-authority-checker. Enter your domain and get your live DR score. Note that DR can fluctuate as Ahrefs updates its link index (typically every few days).
