ChatGPT Brand Tracking: See Where ChatGPT Mentions and Cites You
GetIntel asks your buyer questions on the real ChatGPT app every day, then shows how you came out on each one: recommended first, mentioned, skipped, or not named at all, with the sources ChatGPT cited.

What ChatGPT brand tracking means
ChatGPT brand tracking is checking, on a schedule, whether ChatGPT names your brand when a buyer asks it for a recommendation, and which sources it cites when it answers. Two things get recorded, and they are not the same thing. A mention is your brand named in the answer text. A citation is a link to your site among the sources underneath. ChatGPT often does one without the other, which is why the difference between being mentioned and being cited decides what a tracker should count.
That gap is wider on ChatGPT than on any other engine we measure. In our 2 August 2026 run of 100 buyer questions across 10 software categories, ChatGPT named 5.28 vendors per answer, the most of the five engines tested, while citing 3.66 domains per answer. It returned 387 citations across its 100 answers, the fewest of the five, and 27 of those answers cited no source at all while still recommending products by name. A tracker that only counts links misses most of what ChatGPT says about you.
The unit you track is the buyer question, not a keyword. “What is the best tool for X for a small team” and “X alternatives” get different answers from the same engine on the same day, so tracking means fixing a set of the questions your buyers actually ask and reading every answer to them.
How ChatGPT chooses which brands and sources to name
ChatGPT answers from two places: what the model learned in training, and pages it retrieves with search at the moment of the question. The answer you see blends both, which is how a brand ends up named with no link: the name came from training, the links came from search. OpenAI has not published how it weighs the two, so what follows is what we measured in the output.
It reads a narrow set of sources
On 2 August 2026, ChatGPT’s 387 citations across 100 answers went to 198 distinct domains, the smallest pool of the five engines. Its most-cited domain, techradar.com, took 5.2% of its citations and its top three took 12.4%, against 3.6% for Claude’s top three. Editorial reviews and comparison roundups carry real weight here, and being on the few pages ChatGPT keeps returning to is worth more than being on many it never reads.
Its sources change almost every day, but its verdicts do not
Across 1,050 consecutive daily run pairs between 10 July and 10 August 2026, ChatGPT’s set of cited sources changed 99.7% of the time, with an average overlap of 16.7% from one day to the next. Whether a tracked brand was cited moved far less: it flipped on 7.7% of consecutive ChatGPT runs, the highest of the four daily engines but still rare. We set out what that means for a tracking schedule in tracking ChatGPT recommendations daily.
The API is not the interface your buyers use
Many tools query ChatGPT through OpenAI’s API because it is cheaper and easier than reading chatgpt.com. On 11 August 2026 we sent the same buyer questions both ways across 11 clean pairs. Both averaged 2.18 cited sources, but they shared only 13.6% of them, and on one pair the API cited a domain the interface did not. The full test is in API vs the real ChatGPT interface. It is the reason GetIntel reads the interface.
What you fixed elsewhere does not carry over
ChatGPT is the most independent engine in the set. In our daily tracking to 10 August 2026 its cited sources overlapped Gemini’s by 4.5%, Perplexity’s by 4.8% and Google AI Overviews’ by 4.8%, the three lowest pairings we measured. For why a rival gets named in your place, see why ChatGPT cites competitors instead of your brand, and for what moves a brand into its answers, see how to rank in ChatGPT.
ChatGPT answers 28.3% of buyer questions without naming any product.
How often an engine declines to name anything decides what a gap costs you. We read our own tracked buyer-question set on 2026-09-17 and scored each engine’s dominant state over a trailing 7-day window.
| Engine | Names no product at all | What that means for you |
|---|---|---|
| Perplexity | 71.7% | Mostly leaves the category open |
| ChatGPT | 28.3% | Often answers without naming a tool |
| Google AI Overviews | 15.0% | Usually picks, and cites its sources inline |
| Gemini | 5.0% | Almost always picks a winner |
60 tracked buyer questions, read 2026-09-17, dominant state over a trailing 7-day window. Rows and method are in the published dataset. One category and one brand’s prompt set, not a general claim about any engine. Perplexity is sampled at roughly 2 runs per question against 6 to 7 for the others, so its aggregate is the defensible figure and no per-question Perplexity rate is reported.
ChatGPT sits in the middle of the four. It names a product on roughly seven questions in ten, so most of your category is already decided there, and the remaining 28.3% is the part still winnable by publishing something worth citing.
How to check your brand in ChatGPT by hand, and why it breaks
You can do a first pass yourself in under an hour. Done carefully, it looks like this:
- Write ten questions your buyers really ask. Best-of, alternatives, comparisons, and “is X good for Y”. Keep the exact wording, because you will reuse it.
- Use a logged-out or temporary chat. Memory and custom instructions on your own account shape the answer, and you are not your buyer.
- Record three things per answer: whether you are named, whether you are named first, and which domains appear in the sources.
- Write down who is named instead of you. That list is your real competitive set on ChatGPT, which can differ from the one you pitch against. Finding the competitors ChatGPT recommends walks through it.
- Repeat a week later, same questions, same wording, and compare.
It breaks in four places.
- One answer is a sample, not a reading. When we asked 30 questions three times about 20 minutes apart on 12 August 2026, ChatGPT returned a different set of sources on 93.3% of consecutive runs. A single check can land on the unusual answer.
- You cannot tell which questions are unstable. Of 520 question-and-engine series we tracked from 10 July to 10 August 2026, 455 never changed. On the 65 that did, a single check landed on the minority answer 23.2% of the time.
- Your session is not your buyer’s. Location, account and chat history all change the answer, and a buyer in another country gets a different one.
- It does not scale. Ten questions a week with competitors noted is an afternoon, before you add a second engine or a second market.

How GetIntel tracks your brand in ChatGPT
Every buyer question, grouped into topics.
GetIntel runs the same buyer questions on the real ChatGPT app every day, groups them into topics like pricing, comparisons, and alternatives, and scores each topic on its own with a trend line.
- Same questions asked daily, so the trend is real, not a one-off snapshot
- Each topic scored on its own, not folded into one number
- Read straight from chatgpt.com, not an API
Named, ranked, or skipped: on every buyer question.
For each question, GetIntel records whether ChatGPT recommended you first, mentioned you further down, left you out while naming others, or gave no product answer at all, and you can read the exact answer text behind the score.
- Five answer states: recommended, mentioned, absent, open, or no answer
- Your position among every brand ChatGPT named
- The full answer text, per question, per engine
