What Gemini brand tracking means
Gemini brand tracking is checking, on a schedule, whether Google’s Gemini assistant names your brand when a buyer asks it for a recommendation, and which pages it cites when it answers. Gemini here means the assistant at gemini.google.com and in the Gemini app, not the AI Overview that appears inside Google Search. The two are easy to conflate and they cite different pages: across 100 buyer questions on 5 August 2026 they shared 16.1% of their cited domains.
What makes Gemini different to track is how decisive it is. In our 2 August 2026 run of 100 buying questions across 10 software categories, Gemini named at least one vendor in every single answer, the only engine of the five that never left a question open. On our own tracked question set on 17 September 2026 it named no product on just 5% of questions. If you are absent on Gemini, someone else is almost always present.
And the slot is usually taken by the same few names. Across 919 Gemini answers in the AI visibility category between 12 July and 8 August 2026, Gemini named at least one of 13 tracked vendor brands in 72.1% of answers, the highest rate of the four engines, and the single most-named vendor appeared in 44.8% of them. So the question a Gemini tracker has to answer is less “is anyone named” and more “who got the answer, and on which questions”.
How Gemini chooses its sources
Gemini is grounded in Google Search. For a question that needs current information it retrieves candidate pages from Google’s index and cites a handful of them in the answer. Google has not published the mechanics, so the stage-by-stage pipelines that circulate in SEO circles are inference, not documentation. We cover what is and is not known in how Gemini selects its sources. What we can do is measure the output.
Fewest sources per answer of any engine
On 2 August 2026 Gemini cited 3.50 domains per answer, the fewest of the five engines, against 10.05 for Google AI Overviews. With so few slots per answer, being the fourth-best page on a topic usually means not being cited at all.
A long tail, not a shortlist
Those few citations still spread widely. Across 100 answers Gemini cited 278 different domains, its most-cited domain took 2.0% of its citations, and its top three together took 5.7%, against 19.6% for AI Overviews. There is no small set of sites that wins Gemini across a category. There is the specific page that best answers each specific question.
Its sources churn, its verdicts do not
Gemini swaps its sources more than any other engine. Across 1,058 consecutive daily run pairs between 10 July and 10 August 2026, its cited set changed 99.0% of the time, with the lowest day-to-day overlap we measured at 10.1%. Yet whether a tracked brand was cited flipped on only 0.2% of consecutive Gemini runs, the most stable of the four daily engines. On Gemini a daily source list is mostly noise; the named-or-not verdict is the signal.
Ranking on Google is not being cited by Gemini
Ranking gets a page into consideration. Citation is a stricter test of whether a clean, self-contained passage can be lifted from it. That is how a page ranks well and is never cited, and why Gemini and Google AI Overviews, which share an owner and an index, still agreed on only 12.7% of their sources in our daily tracking. How the three Google surfaces compare is in AI Mode vs AI Overviews vs Gemini, and what changes your odds of being named is in how to rank in Gemini.
Gemini and ChatGPT agree on 4.5% of the sources they cite.
Tracking one engine and assuming the rest follow is the most expensive mistake in this category. We measured it: on 2026-08-11 we took every tracked prompt, collected the set of domains each engine cited across all its runs, and compared engine pairs on the same prompt.
| Engine pair | Prompts compared | Source overlap |
|---|---|---|
| Gemini and Google AI Overviews | 129 | 12.7% |
| Gemini and Perplexity | 130 | 11.2% |
| Gemini and ChatGPT | 130 | 4.5% |
Mean Jaccard overlap between the domain sets two engines cited on the same prompt, counting only prompts where both engines returned at least one citation. The full method and every pair are in the published dataset.
Two things follow. Gemini is closer to Google AI Overviews than to anything else, which is what you would expect from two Google surfaces, and it is still only 12.7%. And Gemini against ChatGPT is 4.5%, meaning a ChatGPT report tells you almost nothing about which pages Gemini is reading. Whatever you fixed to get cited in one is not what gets you cited in the other.
Gemini names a product on 95% of buyer questions, the most decided of the four.
How often an engine declines to name anything decides what a gap costs you. We read our own tracked buyer-question set on 2026-09-17 and scored each engine's dominant state over a trailing 7-day window.
| Engine | Names no product at all | What that means for you |
|---|---|---|
| Gemini | 5.0% | Almost always picks a winner, so absence is expensive |
| Google AI Overviews | 15.0% | Usually picks, and cites its sources inline |
| ChatGPT | 28.3% | Often answers the question without naming a tool |
| Perplexity | 71.7% | Mostly leaves the category open |
60 tracked buyer questions, read 2026-09-17, dominant state over a trailing 7-day window. Rows and method are in the published dataset. One category and one brand’s prompt set, not a general claim about any engine. Perplexity is sampled at roughly 2 runs per question against 6 to 7 for the others, so its aggregate is the defensible figure and no per-question Perplexity rate is reported.
This is why a Gemini gap reads differently from a Perplexity one. When Perplexity names nobody, the category is still open and nobody has won it. When Gemini names nobody, that happened on 3 questions out of 60. The other 57 had a winner, and whether it was you is a question only a per-engine tracker answers.
How to check your brand in Gemini by hand, and why it breaks
A manual check is worth doing once, because it shows you the answer your buyer sees. On Gemini, three things matter that do not on other engines.
- Use a Google account without your own history. Gemini can draw on your Google activity and past chats when those settings are on, and a founder’s own account has spent months searching for their own product.
- Check the right surface. Ask in gemini.google.com or the Gemini app, not in Google Search. AI Overviews and AI Mode are separate surfaces with separate sources, and Gemini inside a Workspace account can behave differently again.
- Ask what your company is, not only who is best. Alongside your buying questions, ask Gemini what your product does and who it is for. If it describes a company with a similar name, that is a different problem from being left off a list, and it needs a different fix.
- Record who took the answer. Gemini almost always names someone, so the useful note on each question is which brand was named and in what order.
Where it breaks is repetition. With a source set that changes on 99% of daily runs, reading the pages Gemini cited on one day tells you little about the next. The verdict is steadier, but you only learn that by asking the same questions many times, and one check cannot tell you whether you caught the usual answer or the rare one. A spreadsheet also keeps no history of which rival held each question last month, which is the comparison that shows whether anything you shipped worked. For a quick automated baseline, the free AI citation checker covers Gemini alongside ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews on 20 buyer questions in about two minutes.

On Pro and Growth, what GetIntel finds becomes ranked tasks across your own pages, third-party pages, communities and technical fixes. Each task says why it matters and what to do. Where it can, GetIntel writes the work for you: the page copy, the outreach pitch, the Reddit reply; new pages come as a brief. Your coding agent can pick it up over MCP.
